State of the Bookshelf
Spent a month or so doomscrolling but we are so back

Invincible
I haven’t read comics in forever, but this one really got me. I tend to avoid comics because I read them so quickly that the price doesn’t always feel justified, but the Invincible omnibus is free on internet archive (thank you Robert Kirkman <3). If you’re watching the show I think the most recent season ends around halfway through the second volume. Highly recommend reading the comics because it gives more context for some seemingly random and/or rushed events in the show.
One thing that struck me about this story is characters really do change, and make huge (like really fucking huge) mistakes, and redeem themselves; and while that takes a bit of patience on the readers’ part it has great pay off in the long run.
I devoured the whole series in like four days and overall I’d give it a 4.5/5 stars. I would’ve given it 5 but some of the writing around fat Eve is soooo out of pocket.

The Assassination of Fred Hampton
50 pages in on this one and I’m already very invested. I think most people are aware that Fred Hampton was killed by the government but don’t have a solid grasp on what his actual ideology was. Specifically the intertwined class and race struggle which mainstream education avoids (likely because communism is still a dirty word around here)
The Obsession
I’ve grown quite fond of Nora Roberts. I’d say her books are in the same vein as something like Frieda McFadden or Colleen Hoover but the actual writing is in my opinion much better. So if that genre of storytelling is your thing but you’re not vibing with either of those authors maybe check out my GOAT Nora.
This book is crazy, I’m about three chapters in and it’s already quite unhinged. Her books typically follow a format of TRAUMATIC INCIDENT followed by FLASH FORWARD followed by SLOW BURN until the inevitable INSANE CONFRONTATION at the end. I am just now wrapping up the traumatic incident but interested to see where it goes. So far the vibes are spooky rural dog days of summer.

Chernobyl : The History of a Nuclear Catastrophe
I’m fascinated by Chernobyl but I just couldn’t get through this one. It’s quite geopolitically focused and written in a mostly academic voice. It also has a very fear-monger-y narrative around nuclear energy in general which I don’t feel so strongly about. Overall probably a decent read just not in the mood for something so dry these days.
How to Keep House While Drowning
The introduction to this book was much too mommy-focused for me. Truly not a scenario I could relate to less. I’m also generally a self help hater so I think it may have been doomed from the start, the language of it all was just so silly to me.
If you are a person who struggles with a clean house I don’t have any book recs, but I do listen to Domestic Daydreams radio cleaning routines and they’re so good. I promise I’m not a trad wife or whatever, but sometimes you just gotta clean the house.
That’s all I’ve got! spring has sprung so I’ve been busy doing other stuff, but hopefully can get in some more light reading soon.
